Get help paying your rent/mortgage during COVID-19
The Federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, passed in March, provided $3.9 billion for Pennsylvania and is intended to help people hurt economically during the pandemic. In late May, the General Assembly directed $175 million of these CARES dollars to PHFA to provide assistance for struggling renters and homeowners. The portion for rent assistance is at least $150 million.
Applications can be submitted through September 30, 2020.

Who can apply?
Renters who have experienced job loss or a reduction in annual income due to COVID-19
Landlords who have lost rental income because a renter has experienced job loss or a reduction in income as a result of COVID-19
What assistance is available?
Up to $750/month per household in state-funded rental assistance
Payments will be made to the landlord on behalf of the renter for a maximum of six months of assistance between March 1 and November 30, 2020 (may include December rent).
For renters, documents required to complete your application:
Income - Verification of your income for two months prior to the application date. See source of income coming soon. There are different supporting documents required depending on your life situation.
- Employment 1) If you are getting unemployment or were approved for it before March 1, 2020, please submit proof of your unemployment letter. 2) If you have been approved for unemployment or you started getting it after March 1, 2020, submit proof of your income two months prior to your application AND provide proof of income from January 1, 2020 to March 1, 2020.
Proof of residency- a document to verify residency at your current address such as a gas bill, cancelled check, I.D. or pay stub for income verification (if you submitted a pay stub for income verification there is no need to do this twice).
Lease Confirmation- a copy of your written lease. Renters with an oral lease are still eligible to participate.

There are 3 applications provided below. Print all 3. The applications require both renter and landlord involvement.
Complete all 3 applications. The landlord must complete the landlord application and the landlord-property certification.
Gather any supplemental documentation requested in the 3 applications
Wait for a response from us on whether you are approved. We will contact you once your application has been approved.
For landlords, documents required to complete your application:
Ownership documentation for each rental unit. - Acceptable proof of ownership documents include, but are not limited to: a copy of the deed, sales contract, most recent property tax receipt, a copy of the mortgage, or proof of homeowner's/hazard insurance from the most recent year.
A lease agreement for each renter

Callers should listen for the prompt mentioning CARES assistance for renters. The county organizations to which CARES applications are submitted also have webpages offering useful information for applicants. All assistance is subject to the availability of funds.
